Is it possible to wrap wire rope layers directly on top of each other? I want to start with a drum diameter of about 6" and a 3/16" aircraft cable and wrap 30 ft. of cable all in a single narrow groove. The resulting OD will be about 11". The wraps and unwraps would always be made with a tension applied of 10% to 25% of the cable's breaking strength. The radius of the first wrap would be taylored so that subsequent wraps would go on in a smooth spiral.
I realize that normal practice is to spiral-wrap a cable on a drum with grooves, but my application doesn't have room for that.
If this approach is not totally unreasonable, then what stranding would be recommended in a 3/16" size cable? Would a plastic jacket be recommended to reduce cable-to-cable abrasion?
